Breonna Taylor
With what has been going on in America especially, I am sure the name Breonna Taylor must sound familiar.
Breonna Taylor, an African American who was 26 years old, was shot to death by Louisville police officers. On March 13th, Louisville police officers got a search warrant and barged into Breonna Taylor’s house just after midnight. After a confrontation, they shot her several times.

Initially, the police were investigating two men suspected of dealing and selling drugs at a house that wasn’t close to Breonna’s apartment. But because they suspected that one of the men used Breonna’s house to receive a package of drugs. The police got a so-called-no-knock-warrant. So just barged into Breonna’s house without even identifying that they were police officers.
The Louisville police officers said that despite having a so-called-no-knock-warrant they actually did knock several times. And when no one responded they then forced entry. The police officers also said that they only fired shots because Breonna’s boyfriend, Kenneth Walker, shot one of the officers in the leg, but that officer was only wounded and eventually made recovery. Walker was charged with attempt to murder a police officer, but the charge was dropped about a month ago.
Although many believe the police officers are lying and covering up what they did, which isn’t shocking nowadays. Breonna’s family and relatives said that the police never identified themselves before barging into the house and that Walker had a license to carry a gun. Walker also said that he only used the gun as self-defense because he thought someone broke into the house.
Also, according to Walker’s lawyer, they found no drugs or any sort of evidence in the house. A recording released last week in which Walker called 911 and told them that somebody barged into the house and had shot his girlfriend.
Breonna’s family also thought it was unacceptable that the police chose to barge into the house after midnight, I mean if you’re conducting a raid why not pick a better suitable time? When the charges against Walker were dropped, many thought it was suspicious and that led to many believe that the police’s version of the story was false.

Breonna’s mother said that Breonna had big dreams just like anyone else and she was ambitious and planned to have a great long career by becoming a nurse and then eventually she would buy a house settle down and raise a family. Just yesterday it was Breonna’s birthday and she would have been 27, she also said that 2020 would be her year and that it would be a great year for her with lots of good opportunities, but unfortunately, life is unexpected and had some other plans for her.
Louisville mayor, Fischer, called Breonna’s death a tragedy and then went on to adopt a new policy in which no-knock warrants were not allowed unless approved by a judge. Then just last week the mayor temporarily suspended all no-knock warrants. Mayor Fischer also made some other changes which included naming a new Chief of Police, all police officers needed to wear bodysuits with fitted cameras in them before a raid and a civilian review board for discipline matters.
Regardless of these changes, after the George Floyd incident, many people were like enough is enough and they brought back the Breonna Taylor case. The people were furious and even though the police officers responsible for George Floyd’s murder were arrested. The one directly involved was charged with second-degree murder, the people said their work isn’t done yet. They demanded that the police officers responsible for killing Breonna Taylor should also be arrested and charged.

Just last night, on Breonna’s birthday, the people of Louisville pulled outside of the Mayor’s house late at night. And started honking and making noises because they didn’t want the Mayor to sleep. They wanted to keep him up all night. Most importantly this is was a message that what he did was not enough. People were demanding justice for Breonna by arresting and charging the police officers involved.
Many celebrities have remembered Breonna on her birthday. By posting about her on their Instagram, these celebrities include Megan Thee Stallion, Doja Cat, Zendaya, Yara Shahidi, and many more. They posted pictures of her and remembered her on her day and used the motto “say her name”.

Just like Breonna and Floyd, there have been others like Ahmed Aubrey, Michael David Dunn, Terrance Sterling, Henry Glover, Jule Dexter, James Brissette and Ronald Madison, and so many more. When will this stop? The time has come to say enough is enough and stand up for what you believe in.
